The University of Hong Kong was founded on March 16, 1910, and formally incorporated on March 30, 1911. Its predecessor, the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese, makes it the oldest institution of higher education in Hong Kong. In its early years, the university operated on a very small scale. From its official opening on March 11, 1912, to its first graduation ceremony in December 1916, it produced only 23 graduates. Following April 9, 1948, the university underwent simultaneous reconstruction of its order and structural transformation, entering a golden age of rapid development. In September 2021, it established the University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen in collaboration with the city of Shenzhen.

As of October 2026, HKU comprises ten faculties and research institutes, with 8,636 faculty and staff members and 31,844 students. It demonstrates strong research capabilities in economics, finance, accounting, biomedicine, dentistry, education, humanities, law, linguistics, political science, and social sciences.
